Sarah-Leigh Cooper grew up in the tiny African nation of Botswana. At the age of 15 Cooper and her family migrated to Kalgoorlie, where she was struck by the beauty and subtlety of the Australian bush; especially the wildflowers and birds.
Cooper finished high school in Perth and went on to study a Bachelor of Fine Art at UWA, after which she completed a Diploma of Education. She has worked with multiple art galleries, arts programs and schools across the state.
Cooper has had artwork exhibited at many fine institutions including; the Art Gallery of Western Australia,
Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Mundaring Arts Centre, Cullity Art Gallery, Kerb and the Goldfields Arts Centre.
Although an accomplished painter, Cooper is best known for her intricate linocut prints. On reflecting on the art form: "I love linocut printmaking, the process of carving a design is like meditation. I work as a high-school teacher, and have two little girls, life is busy and the wonderful thing about linocut is that I can pick it up and put it away very easily – grabbing those few precious moments of ‘me time’ when, and if, they arrive."
Cooper is an environmentally conscious artist. She uses sustainable and recycled materials, with an emphasis on being plastic-free.
Each of Cooper's linocut prints is genuinely handmade – they are not digital prints. She draws the design, carves the block, rolls the ink and presses it by hand. As such each print is slightly different. Cooper embraces the slight ‘imperfections’ as they are evidence of the fact it is made by hand, with love.
